How It Started

Back in 2008, Andris took a job as a junior landscape technician at Mežotne Estate. He wasn't planning a 16-year career in heritage documentation — he just needed work. But something clicked when he started walking those manor grounds. The park's paths told stories. The botanical gardens had character. The views down to the Lielupe were genuinely beautiful.

What struck him hardest was realizing how few people actually got to experience it properly. Visitors wandered without context. Older adults skipped sections because they weren't sure if paths were manageable. Families didn't know which routes worked for their needs. There were no real guides — just maps that didn't tell you what mattered.

That's when it clicked. He decided to study it properly. Went back to school. Got his degree in Environmental Management from the University of Latvia while still working in the field. Combined the practical knowledge with academic rigor. Started documenting things carefully — not just "here's a path" but "here's the gradient, here's where you can rest, here's the history, here's why this matters."

Specialization

What Andris Does

Sixteen years of walking, measuring, documenting, and listening to what visitors actually need

Trail Documentation

Every route measured for distance, elevation change, surface condition, and accessibility. Not estimates — actual data from walking the paths multiple times in different seasons.

Senior Accessibility

Specialized in designing and assessing trails for older adults. Knows what matters: rest benches, surface stability, shade availability, parking proximity, and honest difficulty ratings.

Heritage Landscape

Collaborates with the State Cultural Heritage Agency on documentation projects. Understands both the botanical significance and historical context of Latvia's manor parks.

River Ecosystems

Focused work with the Lielupe Landscape Reserve on riverside corridor assessment. Combines ecological understanding with practical visitor experience design.

Guide Writing

Creates walking guides that are detailed without being overwhelming. Every guide includes what you'll see, how long it takes, where to rest, and why the place matters historically.

Visitor Consultation

Years of walking with actual visitors taught him what people really need to know. Doesn't guess — listens to feedback and adapts recommendations based on real experiences.

Core Belief

Everyone Should Experience It

"Everyone, regardless of age or mobility, should experience Latvia's cultural and natural heritage firsthand. That's not just nice to have — it's the whole point. A 72-year-old with arthritis deserves to see Mežotne's gardens just as much as a 30-year-old does. My job is making sure she can, safely and comfortably."

— Andris Ozolinš

This drives everything he does. When assessing a trail, Andris doesn't just walk it. He walks it with people of different abilities. He measures gradients because a 6% slope is manageable; an 8% slope isn't. He notes where benches are because a rest every 300 meters changes the experience entirely. He documents surface conditions because gravel feels different than packed earth, and that matters when your knees aren't what they used to be.

His guides aren't written from an office. They're written from years of listening to visitors. Real conversations. Real needs. Real feedback that gets incorporated into the next version of the guide. That's why his work stands out — it's built on actual experience, not assumptions.
