Back in 2008, Andris took a job as a junior landscape technician
at Mežotne Estate. He wasn't planning a 16-year career in
heritage documentation — he just needed work. But something
clicked when he started walking those manor grounds. The park's
paths told stories. The botanical gardens had character. The
views down to the Lielupe were genuinely beautiful.
What struck him hardest was realizing how few people actually
got to experience it properly. Visitors wandered without
context. Older adults skipped sections because they weren't sure
if paths were manageable. Families didn't know which routes
worked for their needs. There were no real guides — just maps
that didn't tell you what mattered.
That's when it clicked. He decided to study it properly. Went
back to school. Got his degree in Environmental Management from
the University of Latvia while still working in the field.
Combined the practical knowledge with academic rigor. Started
documenting things carefully — not just "here's a path" but
"here's the gradient, here's where you can rest, here's the
history, here's why this matters."
