The Main Manor Loop — Easy 45-Minute Walk
A gentle circuit around the palace gardens with rest benches every few minutes. Perfect for a first visit or when you want something relaxed.
Read the GuideFollow the river's edge with stunning water views and wildlife spotting opportunities. Several elevation changes, but marked paths make navigation simple. We've included bathroom locations along the way.
We're recommending the Lielupe Riverside Trail for people who've done a few walks and want something with a bit more challenge. It's not strenuous, but you'll definitely feel your legs working — especially on the uphill sections near Pļaviņu village.
The river views make it worthwhile. You'll spot herons fishing, maybe otters if you're lucky, and the beech forests along the water are genuinely beautiful. Plus there's a café at the halfway point, so you can grab coffee and sit by the water for as long as you want.
Red and white blazes on trees. You won't get lost, even if you're not a navigation expert.
The Lielupe runs alongside almost the entire route. Bring a camera — you'll want photos.
Eagles, herons, otters. Early morning walks (before 8am) give you the best chances.
The trail starts at the Mežotne Manor parking area. From there, you'll head down toward the river — about 15 minutes of easy downhill walking that gets you warmed up. Once you hit the riverside path, you're on mostly flat terrain for the first 2 km.
Around the 2.5 km mark, the elevation picks up. There's a steady climb for about 1 km that takes 20-25 minutes. It's manageable, but it's noticeable. Don't rush it. This is where people usually stop at the benches — totally fine to take your time here.
After the climb, you're rewarded with views across a valley. The path then descends gently into Pļaviņu village where you'll find the café. It's a perfect stopping point — stretch your legs, have a coffee, sit for 20 minutes.
Easy 15-minute descent to riverside
2 km of gentle waterside walking, wildlife viewing
1 km elevation gain, 20-25 minutes, rest benches available
Pļaviņu village with café, bathrooms, seating
Gentle descent back to manor, same path or alternative forest route
Most of this route is well-maintained gravel and packed earth. It's not a paved path, but it's definitely walkable. The drainage is good — even after rain, you won't be trudging through mud.
The trickiest section is actually quite short — about 300 meters where the path gets a bit rocky and steeper. This is on the climb up from the riverside. If you've got decent hiking boots with grip, you'll be fine. We don't recommend flip-flops or smooth-soled shoes for this route.
In spring (April-May), watch for muddy patches near the river where snowmelt happens. By June onwards, the path is dry and clean. Fall is beautiful but can be slippery with wet leaves.
This is a practical concern for longer walks, so let's be specific. There's a bathroom at the manor parking area before you start. Then you won't see another one until Pļaviņu village at around the 4 km mark — that's roughly 50 minutes in.
If you need a bathroom sooner, there's really nowhere along the trail. Plan accordingly. The village café is open year-round (Tuesday-Sunday, 10am-6pm) and has clean facilities available for customers.
Rest benches are placed roughly every 1-1.5 km. We've counted eight total along the main route. Most overlook the water, which makes them pleasant places to pause and catch your breath.

We call this a 90-minute route, but that's walking-only time. With the café stop, photo breaks, and bench sitting, most people spend 2.5 to 3 hours out here. That's fine — there's no rush.
Beautiful but muddy near the river. Snow melt creates temporary wet patches. Best to avoid April, go in May when things dry out.
Perfect. Café is busy but that's fine. Start early (7-8am) to beat crowds and heat. Water levels are lower, easier to spot wildlife.
Stunning colors, fewer people. Watch for slippery wet leaves on the rocky section. Ideal if you want solitude and beauty.
Icy patches, shorter daylight. We don't recommend this unless you're an experienced winter hiker. The climb gets treacherous.
The Lielupe Riverside Trail doesn't get as much attention as some of the other palace walks, which is honestly its best quality. You'll share the path with other walkers, but you won't feel crowded. The combination of elevation change, water views, and that nice café break makes it genuinely memorable.
If you've done the Main Manor Loop and found it too easy, this is your next step. If you're not quite ready for the full difficulty, don't worry — you can always shorten it by skipping the return loop and catching the shuttle back from the village.
Pack sunscreen, bring water, wear proper shoes, and go early. You'll have a genuinely great afternoon.
